5 Activities for Kids Who Don't Enjoy Traditional Sports

Just because a child or teenager claims they "don't like sports," doesn't mean they will dislike all physical activities. Sometimes, you need to find the right type of activity beyond the traditional sports, like football, baseball, and soccer. Here are five activities for the kid who is not a fan of typically played sports.

Horseback Riding
Horseback riding Lake County IL is a wonderful way to get a child outside. Riding horses is an art form that requires balance, confidence, and intuition. The activity will also teach your child a variety of important life lessons, like responsibility and building trust. There are many styles of riding that your child can choose from, such as jumping, dressage, or even barrel racing. Horseback riding has also been used for therapeutic purposes.

Boxing
Boxing gyms are rising in popularity these days. Children of any age can reap the benefits of youth boxing lessons. It is a very physical sport, but it requires strength and grace to be an accurate and safe fighter. Similar to riding, boxing is also a way for children to gain confidence and has mental benefits.

Surfing
If you are fortunate enough to live close to the beach, surfing is a wonderful activity for children of all ages, especially if they love the water but do not want to join the local swim team. With the right equipment, you can surf year round to keep up skills. Lessons are also available in local beach towns, so you will be able to find a coach for your child to learn from.

Cross Country
Some children thrive on competition against themselves, rather than a competition against another team. Running offers a wonderful opportunity for children and teens to focus on bettering their physical strength and endurance, while only competing individually. As a bonus, many middle and high schools have a cross country team, which will give your child a chance to make new friends.

Skiing and Snowboarding
You may not live near a snowy mountain, but you can always travel to a mountain resort in the winter months to let your children try their hand at skiing or snowboarding. Sometimes all it takes is new scenery and a new opportunity to get children to try something they never expected to like.

Don't give up on encouraging your children to try different things, including activities that get their hearts pounding. Sometimes the most untraditional things are the most fun.
