3 Questions To Answer Before Purchasing a Horse

The purchase of a horse is a life altering decision. A horse requires a lot of specialized care, a great amount of attention, and a significant amount of financial responsibility. Although caring properly for a horse is complicated, it is extremely rewarding. Before purchasing one, here are three questions to ask and answer to ensure you are ready to welcome it to your family.

Where Will The Horse Live?
Horses do not have to spend their days in a large countryside field, nibbling on grass in the sunshine. If you have the ability to care for your horse each day on your own property (stable needed too), then that is a wonderful, natural option for you. Most people who own horses need to board them at an equestrian center Lake County IL. An equestrian center will board your horse for a monthly or yearly fee and care for it in your absence. This is a great option for those who want more training, more exercise, or more daily attention for their animal.

What Horse Is Appropriate For You?
Different breeds of horses are meant for different lifestyles. The American quarter horse, for example, is the typical choice for the family horse. They are trainable, not too large, and good with children. A thoroughbred is a sporting horse, trained for racing, jumping, or dressage. The miniature horse is not for riding or training, as they can have an attitude, but they do not require a lot of space. There are several other types of horses that require research. Choose the breed that will suit you and your family the best.

Have You Budgeted Realistically?
To reiterate: horses require a lot of specialized care and attention. Beyond the expense of boarding a horse, you will need to carefully budget for basics: hay deliveries, feed, riding equipment, accessories for the stable, and any sporting equipment you want. On top of all the before mentioned things, you also need to budget for equine dentistry and a farrier to care for your horse's hooves on a regular basis.

The bond between a horse and owner is very special. Prepare accordingly, and you will find yourself with a bond to last for years to come.
