Get Out! Book Review and Giveaway!

Hey neighbors,

Here is a really unique book for our Get Out, Get Active Event. Get Out! 150 Easy Ways for Kids and Grown-Ups to Get Into Nature and Build a Greener Future . With summer coming on, how many of you are looking for ways to encourage your children to get outside? This book by Judy Molland has over 150 ways to encourage each other to get out and not only to get out but to build a greener future. This book would be great for any parent, grand-parent or home-schooling family! Nowadays children spend more time inside in front of the television, computer or playing video games and we are creating an overweight generation that no longer plays outside. I am sure most of you remember spending your summers outside playing in mud puddles, flying kites, riding bikes and playing games with the neighbors. This book will help your children experience that!

The Get Started section has ideas like Collecting Stones, Playing Camoflauge Tag, Identify Bird Songs and Bird Calls, Listen to Singing Frogs, etc.

"Idea 13: Find Squirrel Highways. Most squirrels stay in a relatively small area, usually about an acre, their whole lives. They know that area very well, including every branch of the trees they roam. If they didn't have the branches memorized, they couldn't skitter along them at the high speeds they sometimes do-when escaping a predator, for instance, or when a dominant male wants to intimidate a younger male. Watch the squrrels in your yard or at a park for a while and see if you can identify the squirrels' favorite routes-or "squirrel highways."

The next section is called Go Further. It has projects, plans and outings. Raising Butterflys, Adopting a Tree, Building a Bat House, Go Camping, etc. Camping is an activity that our family enjoys on a regular basis. We love to go on hikes and the children collect things that they find like bird nests, walking sticks, unique stones, and occasional bugs. We also enjoy camping at the beaches in Florida where the children like to gather shells, starfish and the occasional sea-horse.

Get Smart builds on the other two sections of the book, encouraging you to be green consumers and eaters. It encourages you to take the kids shopping and let them help you make green decisions. Together compare products and look for those that are the most enviromentally responsible. Teach them to make wise green decisions, by using recycled products, refillable, and to use re-usable bags at the stores.

Get Active has 33 things you and your kids can do beyond setting your recycling on the curb each week. To make the three R's an active hands-on experience. The three R's are Reduce, Re-use and Recycle. This covers Donating or Consigning Used Items, exchanging toys, re-use your shoes, Shoot for Shorter Showers(One my sons need to learn), and that is just a few.

And last but not least is Get Involved, Take a Green Stand. Find your cause, learn all you can, find strength in numbers, and get involved. Some of the choices include, Defend an endangered species, participate in an Earth Day, remodel your home the green way, write to leaders, and be heard online.

The back of the book includes resources of books and websites to help your child Get Out, Get into Nature and Build a Greener Future!

Baby First TV 'I Can Sign" First Words

Hey Neighbors! Here is a really neat gift idea for someone with a young child.  Here we have I Can Sign (First Words) from Baby First  TV.  Now, I am just going to share right here that we have friends who have taught two of their children to sign at a very young age.  And it works!  Their children could sign before they could talk. The Dvd will teach your child many useful words that will be used in day to day life.  Words like: eat, water, milk, cookie, ear, feet hands, kiss, sleep, book, mother, father, and many other words.  Each word is taught in a short video clip where they will see pictures of the word/item and people signing.  There is also a little character at the bottom corner of the video signing along.  The Dvd can be done on English or Spanish.  Also included on the Dvd are printable coloring pages that you can print off by inserting the Dvd into your computer.  Inside the cover of the Dvd case is a little booklet that covers some of the words you and your child

What To Do About Those Fuzzy Uninvited Guests In The Home

When we talk about pests in the home, the most common that we tend to deal with are the creepy-crawlies that find their way in. Ants, termites, and spiders, for instance. Occasionally though, you have a real chance of getting a much bigger, fuzzier unwanted guest in the home. What do you do about the fact your home is at risk of becoming a wildlife sanctuary for some truly unhealthy and even dangerous beasts? Picture by Alexas_Fotos Know the signs It doesn’t matter if you’re in a suburban home, a country cottage, or a fourth-floor apartment. Some animals can find their way just about anywhere. It’s worth knowing the signs of pest infestation so you can confirm it and act on it immediately. Spotting droppings, keeping an ear out for scratching, and looking for signs of nesting like shredded paper, scrunched leaves, and grass clippings around the home without explanation can help you start fighting back.  Hey neighbors, its with a heavy heart I let you all know that my mom (Lori) unexpectedly passed away the end of June. Our family has been taking the time between now and then to be together and remember what a light mom was. I came on towards the end of last year and was planning on fully moving my interviews and review to this website. I intend to to so partially to keep mommas beautiful website going. Thank you all so much for your love and support over the years. ~Mercy
