Buddy and His TrustyPup Pig

Hey neighbors!!

Buddy received the Fling-A-Longs Pig from TrustyPup.  We brought it on vacation with us, to be his special toy for the trip.  After checking in to the hotel and walking Buddy and Brooklyn, we pulled out the new toy.  This on is specifically for Buddy, although Brooklyn was allowed to play with it while I was supervising.  Brooklyn has a tendency to destroy toys unless she is watched.  She has removed squeakers, chewed off the outside of tennis balls, as well as removing all stuffing from toys she plays with, so she only gets to play with this type of toy when supervised.

Buddy loved his Fling-A Longs pig.  It a tennis ball in each end, and the center is stretchy.  It also has that crackle sound, which Buddy loves so well.  I think he likes the sound best!  Anyway, both he and Brooklyn played with the toy for quite some time.  Brooklyn kept trying to steal it away from Buddy.

Buddy played fetch with it for awhile, but his favorite activity was to get hold of the pig and shake it from side to side.  We had to crate him in the evening, so the toy was put away until the next day.  I was concerned Brooklyn would help him destroy it over night.

The Fling-A-Longs from TrustyPup are made tough with Chew Guard Technology.  (Chew Guard Technology adds a tough durable lining to soft plush toys. The lining is combined with reinforced seams to create toys that stand up to rough play.)  They are built to last and are designed for your pet to have fun.  I am pretty sure I could leave the toy with Buddy, but if you have a super chewer like Brooklyn, make sure you supervise play with the dog toy.

If you are looking for some good dog toys that are sturdy and well-built, check out the TrustyPup website and the toys built with Chew Guard Technology.  Be sure to follow TrustyPup on their social media:

Dealing with The After Effects of a Personal Injury: What Steps Should You Take?

Were you recently involved in an accident that resulted in an injury that wasn’t your fault? It can be a devastating time, especially when you don’t know what the future brings. If you’re unable to work and you can’t pay your bills, you need to move quickly to gain access to any disability benefits you may be entitled to. It’s also important to pursue and obtain resolution to who’s responsible for contributing to your injury. Here are a few initial steps to take and tips on how to make sure the process successful.
Get Prompt Medical Care
From the moment you realize that you were injured, you need to get medical care as soon as possible. Personal injuries can fall under a broad range of identifying terms, such as:
  • Falling or injuring yourself in a store
  • Getting whiplash or another serious injury from an accident
  • Product defect
  • Noise-induced hearing loss from a product or from your workplace
This is just a small example of different types of personal injuries that you could experience. Recovery starts with getting an accurate diagnosis and follow up treatment from a doctor. From there, if you think that another business, person, or product in any way may have contributed to your injury, you’ll need to take notes. Write down or record everything that happened in detail as soon as you can. This allows you to keep the details fresh and to be able to easily reference back to the incident as your attorney requests more detailed information.

Seek Reputable Legal Counsel
Obtaining an attorney who may be able to represent you if you have a case is important. Never try to do it on your own. A good attorney will take a careful look at your situation and determine if you have a solid case or not. If you do, it’s important to refer back to your written statement and any other pertinent information regarding the accident, leading up to it and afterward as well. Your attorney may call upon specific witnesses or interview the owner of the business where the injury occurred. You’ll need good legal counsel to represent you in court to help with the case. It's best to choose a law firm familiar with the court system of the city or state where the injury occurred. For instance, if you were seriously hurt outside of Yankee Stadium, narrow the search down to the top Bronx law firms specializing in personal injuries.
Call or Contact Your Employer
It's true that experiencing pain and suffering can make it hard to complete everyday tasks. If you’ve been injured to the point that you can no longer do your job properly, you need to contact your employer right away. If you were injured on the job, you’ll definitely need to report the incident to human resources. From there, you’ll have to fill out an incident report, and see if you need to turn the claim into workers compensation. If so, your lawyer will work directly with them as your claim is processed. If the injury occurred elsewhere, you still need to talk with your employer to see if you have any short or long-term disability with your employee benefits. If you do, now is the time to utilize these benefits so you can get reimbursed while you’re going through the healing process.

Contact Your Creditors
Contacting your creditors may seem like one of the last things you want to do as you’re laying in bed with an injury. In actuality, it's one of the best things you can do to help salvage your credit. If your credit is in good standing, you’ll want to keep it that way. This means if you’re going to be late on your house or car payment, or if you can’t pay your minimum credit card payment this month, call your creditors. In many cases, they will be understanding in regards to your situation and may even waive any late fees. Some creditors may allow you to skip a payment or make payment arrangements without sacrificing your good credit standing. Falling behind on your bills is easy to do when your income comes to a grinding halt.  If you must, you can tap into your savings and other money sources to pay bills, but only after you’ve paid your rent and house payment first. If you're having problems with your creditors, ask your personal injury lawyer for assistance.

Being injured can quickly become a complex issue because it’s often multifaceted. Dealing with your injury, recovery and getting the right monetary support is important for survival. Getting an attorney that will be on your side to help your case is just one step in easing the burden and worry of the accident.

GIVEAWAY!! Our Ark Encounter Visit

Hi all!!

We recently visited the Ark Encounter and the Creation Museum.  While there, we had this cute little dinosaur with us who visited different exhibits at the Ark.  You can see from the pictures some of the sights we saw.  We met some friends from Florida, and stayed in a local hotel, so that we had time to visit both places.

We are going to have a gift box giveaway, that will include this little guy, as well as a couple other gifts.

The Ark is a full size replica of what Noah's Ark might have looked like.  If you have never been there, you need to add it to your sights to see list.  It is one of those things, that you understand must be big, but the reality of seeing it and walking inside is just amazing!!  Inside the Ark, you will see huge cages to contain the animals, pots and other tools used to feed, prepare meals, and contain smaller animals.  There are life size figures of Noah, his wife, his sons and their wives. The Ark has three levels.  It is immense!!

You can view presentations at different spots in the Ark.  There are places to eat, as well as a gift and book store.  Outside they have a petting zoo.

The Creation Museum is approx. 45 minutes from the Ark.  The Creation Museum has a Walk Thru History, an Insectarium, a Bible Room, a Dinosaur Den, a Planetarium, and several programs throughout the day as well.  Outside is a beautiful garden, a petting zoo, and zip lines.  Often there are different creation speakers to listen to.  We heard Tommy Mitchell while there. Super presentation!! Some of our friends rode the zip line.

You will find the Creation Museum in Petersburg, KY.  The Ark is in Williamstown KY.  There are several hotels nearby, so you can spend more than one day in the area.  You really need at least two days, one for the museum and one for the Ark. To find out more information, be sure to visit the website for the Creation Museum and the Ark Encounter.

Now back to the giveaway.  The winner will receive the dinosaur that traveled with us, as well as a penny that was run through the machine at the Ark, and a Creation Museum lanyard.  Then we are going to throw in a few extra goodies just for fun. I will tell about some of the other goodies in the upcoming weeks on Twitter and Facebook, so make sure you are following us there.

So get ready to enter!

What Business Tools Might You Be Needing?

Hey neighbors!

Do any of you own or manage a business?  What tools and systems do you have in place to help your business run smoothly?  We are going to share a few that we think are necessary in todays fast paced, electronic society.

Have you ever considered Master Data Management? For those who are unsure, here is the type of problem having master data management can help clear up.  This is an example I have witnessed personally.  I received an offer for a charge card from a certain company. Even after the card arrived, I continued to receive offers to apply for their card.  Now, had they had some form of master data management strategy in place, I would not have been receiving more offers on a card that I already had. Master data management will make your business run much smoother.  Every department will have access to a master data system and will then not be repeating information or having to check with another department for the verification.  This can prevent duplicate information on your system along with profiling and merging new data with what you already have in place. It will keep track of customers, companies, product, employees and any and all other such necessary information.  Each of these topics can be broken down in to more sub-sections of data. This might be an option you want to consider.

Today, social media is a huge influence in customers finding your business and, of course, for you to stay in touch with customers you already have.  You should have some social media tools in place to help with your social media posting.  Figure out ahead of time which social media outlets work best for you and those you want to reach.  There are so many options available now that you might want to choose just two or three to focus on.  You can find information online regarding what ages commonly use each different form of social media.  If your business is geared towards crafty or do-it-yourself folks, you would probably be best served by maintaining a presence on sites such as Pinterest, Instagram, and Facebook. If your business isn't one that most young people are going to be searching for, a Facebook page to go along with a standard website is probably your best option. Simply having a social media page is not enough, though. Make sure you post regularly on each page/site you run. I know of a radio station that tried building their listening base by opening a Facebook page, but they never post on it which means, of course, that there is no new interest being generated. Sharing sales or specials you are running, reviews from customers, or just general information relative to your business/interest is so easy and will increase your following very quickly. You can also use social media platforms to run giveaways or contests and give entrants extra points or entries for sharing with their friends. You will be amazed how quickly your following grows! In this day and age, a social media presence is almost necessary to run a successful business. If you're uncomfortable running it yourself, find/hire someone who is familiar with social media and will keep a fun and consistent posting schedule to attract new potential customers as well as keeping the interest of current customers/followers. There are actually individuals and companies today that are willing to manage your social media for you.  For example, my daughter posts for a group and they pay her monthly for a certain amount of posts. Social media is a business tool you can not afford to miss out on!

Small businesses may want to look into creating a website, and then post at least once a week with some form of update.  You can tell a little about your business, or review one of your products, anything that brings customers back to see more.  There are all a multitude of small business tools and apps available for the small business owner.  You can find places to store files, make posts, send emails, complete research and many other resources that will  improve your business.

Take a moment and share with us a few of the tools/apps you use and tell us how they have worked for you.  Thank you for stopping by.

Do You Need A Personal Injury Attorney?

Hey neighbors!

If you or someone you love has been injured due to another person's neglect or irresponsible actions, do you know what your options are?  Do you know how to find out what your best choices are?  If you are like me, you have no idea what the laws regarding personal injury are, so the best thing to do would be to get help from someone who does.  A personal injury lawyer will know all the ins and outs of the law and he/she will be able to tell you if you have what is required to open a case.

Although in many states you are allowed to file a claim for yourself, unless you know what you are doing chances are you will be better off hiring a good lawyer.  He will be able to guide you throughout the entire process of your case and most likely bring about better results.  He can give you advice where needed concerning; compensation for losing time at work, how you will recover your medical expenses, and other problems that you might be worrying about.

How can you find a good lawyer?  Try asking friends and relatives for referrals of attorneys they have worked with. You can also Google " personal injury attorney tampa ", of course use whatever city you a searching for an attorney in.  Take time and read reviews of previous clients.  You can also contact the local Better Business Bureau or the local bar association to see if any complaints have been made and to get good recommendations.  Give the attorney's office a call and see if you can set up a consultation as many attorneys will offer a free, first consultation.  Some lawyers do charge for the initial consultation, so be sure to check on this in advance.  After the consultation, you can decide if this is the lawyer you want representing you, or if you need to keep searching.  Another important factor is to find out how they handle their fees.  You may also decide after the consultation that you do not have a case and you will need to consider other options.

An experienced lawyer will be able to let you know what you will be required to have for your case.  They will help get your paperwork together, file papers, help you arrange for qualified witnesses if needed, and gather other pertinent information.  He will know if there are any time limits for filing in your state. Since the insurance company handles cases like this on a regular basis and will obviously be trying to pay the minimum, you want a lawyer on your side who has the same type of experience in dealing with personal injury cases to assist you. It is beneficial if he has handled cases like yours.

If any of our neighbors here have had experience with a personal injury attorney please take a moment to share about your experience in the comments.  What you share might help someone else here. Thanks for stopping by!

Blue Gate Theatre-Shipshewana, IN #TravelTuesday #BlueGateTheatre

How many of our readers have ever heard of Shipshewana, Indiana? Probably quite a few, because although not as well known as some vacation destinations, I had heard of this Amish country locale for several years before we ever visited. Last month, my sisters and I took our mom for a two-night "girls getaway" to Shipshewana with the highlight being a visit to the Blue Gate Theatre for a concert by her favorite Gospel music group, the Inspirations. We did a lot of research before heading out, so I knew there would be plenty to do in town and nearby. We had a full day set to spend in Shipshewana and it was so neat to who some shopping at the local businesses, watch all the horse-drawn buggies go by, and just enjoy the slower pace of life there.

As I said though, our highlight was our visit to the Blue Gate Theatre. Blue Gate is a family-owned business that also operates a fantastic restaurant and bakery as well as the Blue Gate Inn, so be sure to plan a stop in for dinner, some delicious baked goods, or check out their package deals that include lodging, tickets, and a meal.

The "show" started at 7:00 on the evening we attended, so we showed up a little early to have a chance to look around. The theatre, bakery, and restaurant are all in the same building so you can eat dinner before the show or at least wander through the bakery and pick up a treat to take home. *The smells alone are enough to make you want to browse for a while!* We headed upstairs to the theatre about 6:30 and were pleased to see that the Inspirations had their product table set up so we could buy a new CD or just chat with the guys for a few minutes. We weren't sure how the setup would be at the theatre as far as being able to talk with the Inspirations (usually we see them in a Church or concert venue setting) so we were pleased that they had their product table out. Before the show started, it's apparently tradition to give a pie away to one of the attendees, so the emcee got announcements out of the way and then proceeded with the giveaway. Unfortunately, we didn't win-although we did try making friends with the winner so we could at least get a taste! (Not really, but we thought about it!)

We were told that it depends on the show or concert as to whether or not there's an intermission, and the Inspirations had opted to just run their concert straight through. M and I had front row seats so we were excited to be literally within touching distance of the stage. The concert was incredible, as we have come to expect from the Inspirations. It was a unique experience having it at a theatre rather than a church setting. It's a very close, intimate setting though, so you definitely don't feel lost in the crowd or claustrophobic if you (like my mom) don't really enjoy big crowds. When we left that evening, we were thoroughly satisfied with the experience, and extremely happy we had driven the distance (six hours) to visit. We're pretty sure it won't be our last visit either, as they have a great lineup of other Gospel concerts throughout the year as well as various shows and performances. We heard from Matt, lead singer from the Inspirations, that he had attended the afternoon showing of Stolen: The Musical, which is an Amish-based suspense that he said was incredibly well done, entertaining, and great for the whole family. Our family loves the old Hollywood musicals, so I'm thinking another trip to see Stolen might be in our future!

For more information about Blue Gate Theatre and their upcoming shows and concerts, be sure to check out their website. Your whole family will love the atmosphere of Shipshewana as well as the delicious food and clean, fun entertainment!!

5 Summer Safety Tips for Your Pet

As summer rolls in, you may be thinking about how to beat the heat, how to entertain the kids, and what kind affordable family vacations might be available. You may have summer safety on your mind as well and keeping everyone safe includes your treasured family pet. If you want to keep your dog or cat out of danger this summer, there are a few actions you can take to ensure its safety while it enjoys the warm weather with your family.

1.      Change Out Water Daily

Giving your pet access to clean, cool water daily can be vital to its health. Dogs and cats cannot sweat, so they pant to regulate their body temperature in hot weather. If they refuse their water because it is dirty or hot, they may dehydrate or pant heavily, which can affect their health. Clean your pet’s water bowls daily and check them often in hot weather, especially if they are outdoors.

2.      Latch Your Pool Gate

Just as curious toddlers might wander too close to the edge of a pool, puppies and young dogs might do the same out of curiosity and fall in while you are not home. While most dogs can swim and some breeds, like the black Labrador, are drawn to water, puppies may drown easily because of their size. If you own a pool, make sure the gate slates are not wide enough for your pup to wriggle through, and use a secure latch that it cannot bat open.

3.      Practice Car Safety

If your dog enjoys riding in the car, it is wise to practice safety techniques that will prevent injuries. You can add a dog-friendly pet harness to your existing seatbelt system and train your dog to sit or lie down when the car is in motion. Never allow your pet to travel in the open bed of a pickup truck, and crate nervous pets to prevent them from distracting you when you are driving.

If you are driving to a place where a dog will not be allowed, such as a restaurant or a grocery store, it is best to leave it at home when the weather is hot. Leaving a dog in a hot car can cause heatstroke within 20 minutes and death within 30, depending on the temperature. Your dog may be better off at home, where it can relax in the shade.

4.      Give Your Pet Room To Rest

Just as you might want to rest on a hot day, your pet may not feel like playing or being petted in warm weather either. Give your pet a cool, shady place where it can sleep during the hottest part of the day, away from people. Older dogs may be especially irritable and bite when they are disturbed on a hot day.

Since a dog bite could mean a serious hike in your homeowners insurance rates, it is a good idea to teach any young children who visit your home to never disturb a dog when it is asleep, especially on a hot day. Contact your local agent for more info on homeowners insurance and what type of coverage you might need if you own a pet.

5.      Keep Your Pets Inside on July 4th

Fireworks can spook an animal or cause it to panic and break out of your yard, where it can be hit by a car or attacked by other animals. If you take your family to view fireworks, make sure your dog is in a secure location indoors and shut the windows to reduce noise before you leave.

Summertime can be a fun time of year for the whole family, including your pet. Keeping your furry friend’s safety in mind during warm weather can prevent tragic accidents and ensure its well-being the whole season long.

Does Your Child Need A Hearing Aid?

Image

It is never easy when you find health issues with your child.  You might feel inadequate when you realize that they have health problems that need to be addressed. Do not let this get you down, just make sure you can get the proper medical help.

Hearing is something which can be difficult to spot because your child often will not show signs of diminished hearing or deafness, however there are some signs that you can look for to determine whether or not your child has a hearing issue and whether you will need to be choosing an audiologist for them the next time you visit the doctor.

Selective Hearing
It might seem like your child is purposely ignoring you at times, and then there will be other times that they hear you right away with no issues at all. However, you will find that your child isn’t doing it to annoy you, they might simply have issues hearing you under certain conditions and this can be a sign that they need a hearing test.

Volume is Loud
If you are watching TV as a family in the evening, you might start to notice that your child asks for the volume to be turned up louder than the rest of the family needs it. It could be that they enjoy a louder TV, however it is more likely that your child is struggling to hear the TV and they need a higher volume as a result.

Falling Grades
You might notice that your child’s grades have started to noticeably fall over the last few months or the last year. You might even receive a call from your child's teacher.  This can be a sign that your child is unable to hear what the teacher is explaining to them. Talk to your teacher and see if they mention anything about your child not listening or not concentrating as this could be a warning signal that they need help with their hearing.

Speaking Loud
When people are hard of hearing they will often talk louder than they need to because they think that they need to compensate for not being able to hear anything. If you start to notice that the volume your child speaks is rising, you need to think about getting them booked in with the doctor.  We all have a tendency to speak louder when we can not hear the other person speaking.

What?
It might seem annoying when you are talking to someone and they reply by asking "What?", but it is not their fault if they cannot hear what you are saying properly and need it repeated in a louder tone. If you notice your child doing this more often than not, you will need to think about taking them to the doctors and they might need their ears cleared of wax blockage, or it could be a sign that they need a hearing aid.

Signs of Being Anti-Social
Not being able to hear what people are talking about can have an effect on your confidence, and as a child it can really affect how they feel. It could make them feel inadequate and to feel as if they aren’t good enough. When your child starts acting more quiet than usual and not joining in with conversations, it could be due to them not being able to hear what the other kids are saying and therefore not being able to respond.

The signs do not always point to your child requiring a hearing aid, but just make sure to have there hearing checked to make sure, especially if more than one of the warning signs appear.  School is starting soon, and this is the perfect time to have their hearing checked.

Thanks for stopping by!  See you soon!

Click here to purchase your copy.

My Thoughts

This is the first book I have read in this series, so I am a little behind as far as the back story.  Some of that is revealed in this book, but if you want to know more you can grab the previous titles in the Jim Mitchell series first.  In this book Jim Mitchell is forced into a position as a state assembly member after he views the murder of the woman who was to hold this position.  He is pushed and pulled on from different sides as the story continues. As someone who has never read any books by Dave Milbrandt, I will say I was impressed.  He held my attention from page one and gave insights into both media and politics in an interesting manner.

Overall a well written book.  It is definitely worth your while to check into the previous books first to understand where he is coming from.  The book is 197 pages long, so sort of a short read rather than a  full novel.  If you are interested in political based books be sure to try Running.

About the Author

The author of Chasing Deception and Undue Pressure, Dave Milbrandt fell in love with writing in junior high and has been a storyteller ever since. A former staff writer for a daily newspaper, the Southern California native spent five years in journalism and public relations before becoming a teacher. Having worked at several area colleges, Dave has taught high school English and Social Studies classes since 2005 and fills his evenings sharing a passion for politics with his community college students. Dave and his wife, Lynn, have been married since 1997.

Guest Post from Dave

In 1998, I feverishly pounded out the first draft of Chasing Deception (book one in the Jim Mitchell series) in five weeks. Full of ambition, but bereft of wisdom of how the publishing world works, I assumed my novel would be published in short order. Despite my overly abundant self-assurance, I had to wait until 2013 to get that story out. I was in a hurry, but God, as usual, had other plans. Over the last 20 years, I have discovered the gift of patience and more about the craft of good writing than I ever could have expected during that summer half a lifetime ago. With Undue Pressure (2016) and Running (2018), I have completed the trilogy I never planned to write and hopefully given readers some characters that will stick with them after they reach the end of the story.
