Fun In Louisville #2-The Arctic Scoop! #IceCream

Today's Louisville feature is, without a doubt, one of my favorites for two reasons. First of all, I just love ice cream! I've tried to cut back a little, but believe me when I say I could easily eat ice cream every single day without ever getting tired of it. The second reason I loved this visit so much is because it was so unique! Let me explain a little bit about The Arctic Scoop first, and you'll see what I mean.

"Ice Cream has always been fun to eat, but now it is just as much fun to make. With the use of Liquid Nitrogen, as a freezing agent, we are able to custom make your ice cream right in front of your eyes. As we chill your cream, a cold cloud forms and we mix your cream into the freshest ice cream available."

We visited on a Friday evening after dinner, and were each able to choose an ice cream. You can choose form premium or low fat ice cream, or frozen yogurt, soy cream, or almond ice as your base. Then you can choose a flavor and add-ins. Alison recommended the Honey Cinnamon flavor, and I decided to give it a try. It was interesting to watch them actually make it right in front of you! It's a very quick process, but believe me; you've never tasted fresh ice cream like this in an ice cream shop before! I was surprised by how much better it tasted; very rich and creamy. The honey cinnamon may sound like a different kind of flavor, but you have to try it!! I love Mexican fried ice cream, and this has a very similar taste, minus the shell obviously. Finding little patches of real cinnamon in the ice cream was so delicious. The perfect way to cool off in the evening after a long day!

C mentioned that she was a chocolate and peanut butter person, so she had-you guessed it-the chocolate peanut butter combination! This is made with dark chocolate and has ribbons of real peanut butter running through it; so delicious.

M asked for the Mint Chocolate Chip, and we thought it was neat that this is actually made with peppermint oil, not an artificial mint flavoring. She finished this bowl of ice cream very quickly, but was kind enough to let me have a small bite first!

The younger M had the Elsa's Frozen Ice Palace, which is white chocolate and cheesecake. At first glance this may not appear to be anything more than just vanilla ice cream, but one bite and you've got both flavors bursting! I thought it was a great combination, but of course anything that mixes cheesecake with white chocolate has my vote!

The Arctic Scoop is definitely a place you will want to visit when you're in Louisville. We found it to be a busy place, but it's quiet and friendly, perfect for a family trip to the ice cream shop. It's the only place in town you can get ice cream made to your taste right in front of your eyes!

Hello Neighbor!

Good to see you today.  I recently received some Gourmet Dog Treats from Lindy & Company.  Boy were our dogs excited!  They LOVE when they get the opportunity to try new treats.  The unique thing about these treats is that not only are you getting some special treats for your pets, you are also helping homeless youth.  Lindy & Company treats are homemade by homeless youth and young adults.  There is an estimated 550,000 youth in the United States every year that are homeless and that number climbs to 2 million if you count those that go from home to home sleeping wherever they can.  Daybreak, a non-profit in Ohio created Lindy & Company that teaches youth and young adults valuable work skills so they can get off the streets and never have to end up there again.

Did our dogs like these gourmet treats?  Just take a look at the pictures and you will see.  Both Glory and Belle, would not leave my side until the dog treats were totally put away.  They were able to try several flavors of the treats in two different sizes.  They come as regular sized treats, and also as training treats.  We received Cheddar Chompers, Peanut Butter and Bacon, Apples & Cheese Please, and Peanut Butter But Better.   They really enjoyed the treats!

DiBella's Subs-The Best In The World! #FoodieFriday #Subs

Long ago and far away, in the town of Rochester....Sorry, this isn't a fairy tale, but the food I'm about to share with you is good enough to be one!! Let me start over.

About 10 years ago, we were visiting friends in the Rochester, NY area. These friends happened to know how much we all loved sub sandwiches, and kept mentioning a place called DiBella's. Of course we had to visit, and that turned into a family ritual; any time we were in New York, we had to stop at DiBella's at least once. Fast forward to 2015, when we now live in the midwest, haven't been to New York in 4 years, and there are no DiBella's Old-Fashioned Submarines within 100 miles. As we were planning a trip to Indianapolis and Louisville a few weeks ago, I was checking out food options. (Sign of a real foodie, I know. I always have to know where we can eat on any trip!). Would you believe I learned there are actually 3 DiBella's locations in Indianapolis? I was, to put it mildly, ecstatic! 3 locations, and I've been to and through Indy so many times in the past few years without knowing about it! Yes, this was a highlight of our recent trip.

We visited the DiBella's at Traders Point, located at the end of a shopping plaza. We were thrilled to be eating at DiBella's, but of course there was also a little bit of, "Will it be as good as we remember? What if the food has changed?" (Let me put your mind at ease and say that it has not changed a bit). C and I decided to split the large Italian Assorted-we remembered how big these subs were, and that we always had leftovers in the past. The Italian Assorted comes with Genoa Salami and Capicola, and your choice of cheese. There are also various toppings you can add; mayo, mustard, pickles, olives, lettuce, onion, peppers, and of course DiBella's Famous Oil Dressing. Oh, and you can choose your bread as well; I personally LOVE their multigrain bread, but they also have plain, sesame, and everything. Your sub is made fresh right in front of you, and there's also a display of sides that you can add to your meal. Italian pasta salad, macaroni salad, potato salad, huge deli pickles, and potato chips. Between the 5 of us we ended up trying all the sides. And of course some of Grandma DiBella's Famous Chocolate Chip Cookies with walnuts!

When we actually sat down to eat, it was amazing biting into a DiBella's sub again after so long. These are made on fresh rolls, with fresh, high-quality meats and cheeses, and the DiBella's oil dressing is fantastic. Yes, DiBella's Subs are still the best in the world! M tried the Old Fashioned sub (Turkey, Ham and Salami) and she said it was very tasty as well. You just can't beat the fresh flavor of these subs!
Old Fashioned on Plain
Italian Assorted on Multigrain
Italian Assorted on Sesame
We did some sharing with the sides, so I was able to taste all of them. The potato salad and macaroni salad were very good, but I was surprised to find that I actually liked the Italian pasta salad. I normally don't care for this type of thing, but DiBella's has a creamier dressing than most that I found delicious. If you ever find yourself at a DiBella's, definitely try this pasta salad!

Love this Italian pasta salad!
I said the pickles were big!
To finish off our meal (although some of us were too full for dessert right away) we had some of the cookies. These are quite honestly the best cookies I've had in a restaurant. That perfect combination of chewy inside with a crispy outside, large chocolate chunks, and walnuts...my favorite kind of cookie!

As you can probably tell, we thoroughly enjoyed our meal at DiBella's. The employees were very friendly, made the subs exactly as we asked (when M asked for a little mayonnaise, he made sure not to just squeeze on a normal amount), and were helpful in answering our questions. During the course of our meal two different employees (one manager and one of the sub-makers) came by and asked how the food was, if we needed anything, etc. It's not your typical sub shop that gives you your food and doesn't care about anything else! So, now I know that anytime we're in Indianapolis, I can stop by this DiBella's for some great food and great service!

Fun In Louisville #1-HomeTown Buffet #Giveaway

Last week our family took a trip to Louisville, KY. Our main reason for going was to attend the National Quartet Convention Spring Break event, but we also enjoy shopping in the Louisville area, and eating at some restaurants that aren't around the small-town midwest! One of these is HomeTown Buffet; I believe our closest location is over 2 hours away, so when I learned there was one literally right across the street from our hotel, and they offered some guest passes for review (and a giveaway!) I was excited!

Upon entering the HomeTown Buffet we were greeted by a young man who "took our order" (asked if we'd like beverages with our meal, etc.) and then seated ourselves. Our server was a very friendly lady who introduced herself as Granny, and proceeded to chat for a couple minutes. Not all restaurants have servers this polite and friendly, so we enjoyed someone who did more than just grunt when you ask a question!

For most of us, the first stop was the salad bar. I love a fresh salad, and HomeTown has so many ingredients to include. The lettuces and veggies looked fresh, which doesn't always happen at buffets. We did have a small mix-up with dressings that were labeled wrong, and 2 of us had to go remake our salads with the proper dressing after getting a taste of what was definitely not ranch dressing.

After the salads we moved on to the meats and such. I was hoping for a pot roast skillet, as D had tried one and said it was very good, but unfortunately they wireline when I reached the buffet line, and were not refilled at all during our meal. I did enjoy the grilled fish though, and broccoli with cheese sauce-mmm! Other items on the buffet our family enjoyed were create-your-own tacos, Chinese chicken, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, and of course some dinner rolls. There was plenty of variety for each individual taste.

After finishing my meal I headed over to the dessert section, and found something new since my last visit to a HomeTown-dessert "shooters". These are mini desserts in little cups, and include banana pudding, various cheesecakes, and a couple other pie-style desserts. I tried a blueberry cheesecake shooter and a banana pudding shooter, which was topped with a vanilla wafer. The flavor was great, but unfortunately the dessert itself was room temperature-almost lukewarm-which did lessen the enjoyment a bit.

Overall our meal was good and enjoyable, other than the few things I mentioned. I do like all the variety at HomeTown Buffet, which even includes the beverages. White and chocolate milk, sodas, coffee, and tea...pretty much whatever you're in the mood for!

HomeTown Buffet is giving one of my readers 2 Guest Passes!!

Scott Naturals Tube Free and Earth Day

Hey neighbors!

How many of you celebrate Earth Day?  We don't really do much of anything, butI do have to say that when Scott Naturals reached out, I was interested.  Now, I may not do this for the same reason you do, but when I can cut down on the amount of garbage and throw away items leaving my home, I try to do it.  For example, we use re-usable water jugs and fill our water bottles.  We re-cycle our cans and bottles from soda.  We also try to re-use all the boxes and manilla envelopes sent to us.  Yes, I save bubble wrap and other filler to re-use.

So, Scott Naturals has a tube free toilet paper.  No more cardboard tube to throw away, or try to come up with a new use for.  We used to have hamsters and they loved them, but no more hamsters.   The benefit of the Tube Free roll is obvious.  Were you aware there are 17 billion toilet paper tubes used every year?  That is amazing!

Would you be interested in trying the Scott Naturals Tube Free Toilet Paper?  If so, they have a contest going on, right now.  You can win a years supply of Scott Naturals Tube Free TP, just by commenting on the picture on their Facebook page.  HERE!  Hustle over and leave a comment to enter!

Thanks for stopping by neighbor!  See you soon!

ARTistic Pursuits - The Elements of Art and Composition

ARTistic Pursuits Review

Hey neighbors!

We have a really good art curriculum we recently reviewed to share with you.  It is High School 9-12, Book 1:The Elements of Art and Composition from ARTistic Pursuits.  This book is recommended for grade 9-12 and is Book One in the series.  The second book is Color and Composition.  I sure would have loved a course like this when I was younger as I doodled all the time!

ARTistic Pursuits Review

Both of my youngest daughters (14 and 17), enjoy drawing.  I suppose it is because we have spent so much time together drawing, coloring and such, but both have an interest in learning more about pencil drawing.  So when we were offered this course I jumped on it.

We had most of the needed supplies, but I recommend you prepare ahead of time.  For the first semester you will need:
1 - Drawing Pencil Set (from 2H to 4B
1 - Vinyl Eraser
1 - Metal Handheld Sharpener
1 - Drawing Pad (Make sure it is a good quality of paper, as this makes a difference.)
The second semester requires a few other supplies, but you can start out with these.

Plan on having 2 classes a week, approx. one hour for each class.  Since I have an interest in drawing, I read through each lesson I assigned.  By doing this, I was able to follow along and see what they understood and what they needed more help with.

The units are broken down in easy to follow lessons.  Each Unit starts with a word description and pictures that show what they are talking about.  For example when covering space in a drawing, they have an example with arrows pointing to the spots they are describing.  The next lesson is Art Appreciation and History.  Here art work of the masters are shown and the student will see how they used that specific technique in their work.  Techniques is the following lesson.  Here is where they will learn to use their their materials and tools to create their own work of art.  Application is when they will take what they have learned in the previous lessons and do a final project.

This Artistic Pursuits book covers Space, Line, Texture Balance, Composition and many other topics that will assist your student in drawing well.  I personally want to get to the "Proportion, The Face" and "Proportion,   the Figure" because that is an area I always have trouble with.  It is near the end of the book, so I will wait patiently until we get there.

What did we like?  We really like that the lessons are easy to understand, and they do not assume you know everything.   For example, the first lesson challenges you to see more and perhaps see from a different perspective.  They describe how different family members focus on different things on a trip and how that focus will affect the way you view things as you start to draw.

So, if you have a budding artist in your family, or perhaps a more advanced artist, be sure to visit the ARTistic Pursuits site and see what they have to offer.  They do offer a sculpting course.   The Crew members reviewed some of their other books, so be sure to click on the link below to see what they thought.
