Verizon FIOS

Hey Neighbors!

How many of you have ever heard of Verizon FIOS? I had heard it mentioned, but was not sure exactly what it was. So, I took some time to check it out when I was offered this opportunity.

Verizon FIOS is Americas top rated high speed internet service. It also allows fast upload speeds and has amazingly clear streaming video. FIOS internet is 100% fiber optic. Now I don't know about you, but I get frustrated when I am uploading or trying to stream video and it takes forever, or stops and glitches. This would be a great benefit to me. FIOS can upload a 50 MB photo album in 20 seconds and can download 10 songs in 8 seconds. To me that is amazing! Ten 1 MB attachments in 4 seconds. I don't know how many times I have had to sit waiting for attachments. FIOS comes with Verizon email, WiFi access, and it includes a personal web space to build your own blog or website. You can backup your pictures, records, videos, etc, from accidental damage, power surges, hackers, etc. What a comfort that is. I lost everything on one computer because I did not backup my files, and this sounds like an even better option.

The next feature I like best is the FIOS Digital Voice feature. You can have an individual ring tone for different family members. You can set the phone up to block callers who block their caller id information. You know, like telemarketers. You can give 3 numbers to forward your calls to so you won't miss any important calls. Now, that is a nice feature. You can actually send all callers immediately to voice mail or you can choose a list of callers you want to be allowed through at all times. I think I am beginning to wish we had Verizon FIOS. For an additional charge you can receive 3 other numbers that will ring through your phone, each with a distinctive ring so you know who or why they are calling.

FIOS also includes TV, which we personally would not use, but I will include the information for you. The fiber optic technology allows you to watch HDTV with less interruptions and pixelation or weather interference. Flex View allows you to watch what you want when you want where you want.

To be quite honest I would probably really enjoy the phone and internet options available through FIOS.

Get Out! Book Review and Giveaway!

Hey neighbors,

Here is a really unique book for our Get Out, Get Active Event. Get Out! 150 Easy Ways for Kids and Grown-Ups to Get Into Nature and Build a Greener Future . With summer coming on, how many of you are looking for ways to encourage your children to get outside? This book by Judy Molland has over 150 ways to encourage each other to get out and not only to get out but to build a greener future. This book would be great for any parent, grand-parent or home-schooling family! Nowadays children spend more time inside in front of the television, computer or playing video games and we are creating an overweight generation that no longer plays outside. I am sure most of you remember spending your summers outside playing in mud puddles, flying kites, riding bikes and playing games with the neighbors. This book will help your children experience that!

The Get Started section has ideas like Collecting Stones, Playing Camoflauge Tag, Identify Bird Songs and Bird Calls, Listen to Singing Frogs, etc.

"Idea 13: Find Squirrel Highways. Most squirrels stay in a relatively small area, usually about an acre, their whole lives. They know that area very well, including every branch of the trees they roam. If they didn't have the branches memorized, they couldn't skitter along them at the high speeds they sometimes do-when escaping a predator, for instance, or when a dominant male wants to intimidate a younger male. Watch the squrrels in your yard or at a park for a while and see if you can identify the squirrels' favorite routes-or "squirrel highways."

The next section is called Go Further. It has projects, plans and outings. Raising Butterflys, Adopting a Tree, Building a Bat House, Go Camping, etc. Camping is an activity that our family enjoys on a regular basis. We love to go on hikes and the children collect things that they find like bird nests, walking sticks, unique stones, and occasional bugs. We also enjoy camping at the beaches in Florida where the children like to gather shells, starfish and the occasional sea-horse.

Get Smart builds on the other two sections of the book, encouraging you to be green consumers and eaters. It encourages you to take the kids shopping and let them help you make green decisions. Together compare products and look for those that are the most enviromentally responsible. Teach them to make wise green decisions, by using recycled products, refillable, and to use re-usable bags at the stores.

Get Active has 33 things you and your kids can do beyond setting your recycling on the curb each week. To make the three R's an active hands-on experience. The three R's are Reduce, Re-use and Recycle. This covers Donating or Consigning Used Items, exchanging toys, re-use your shoes, Shoot for Shorter Showers(One my sons need to learn), and that is just a few.

And last but not least is Get Involved, Take a Green Stand. Find your cause, learn all you can, find strength in numbers, and get involved. Some of the choices include, Defend an endangered species, participate in an Earth Day, remodel your home the green way, write to leaders, and be heard online.

The back of the book includes resources of books and websites to help your child Get Out, Get into Nature and Build a Greener Future!

One reader At The Fence will receive a copy of Get Out!

At the Fence Update

Hi Neighbors!

Sorry for the delay in posts. Wed. evening I went to the ER for my back pain. They did a Cat Scan and said I apparently had some problems with a disc. So they gave me medication and sent me home (hotel). Thursday the medication was not working so we went to another ER, who ordered an MRI. And yes there is a bulging disc. They were considering steroid shots when another problem arose. I am diabetic, and steroids raise your blood sugar. So I am presently in a hospital bed, trying to lower my blood sugar while trying to find the right medications to control the pain. I will try to post as I am able. Prayers are appreciated.

See you At the Fence,
Lori

Heartrate Monitors USA Camelbak Waterbottle Review

Hi Neighbors!

Heartrate Monitors USA sent me this really great Camelbak Bottle for review and it fits right in with the theme of Get Out Get Active. Camelbak bottles are really very handy. You can use them gardening, bird watching, walking, jogging, while playing sports, etc. There are just so many uses for a Camelbak. I love the one I received

!

The top of the Camelbak water bottle has a flip up drinking straw. The tip is a soft rubber with a slit in the top that you lightly bite down on. With this design and the straw inside you do not have to tilt the bottle to drink. The bottle is spill poof. There is also a loop built onto the lid that you can attach a sports clip to or just carry it with the crook of your finger. The Camelbak is sturdy, well-made, BPA Free. The Camelbak bottle is safe to clean in the top rack of your dishwasher . This bottle is 16 oz. but Camelbaks come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Once I can get up and going again, I will be using mine for walking and racquetball. I am sure my children will be borrowing it at times too for their activities. If you are in the market for a great water bottle, make sure you check out the Camelbak bottles! Remember to with summer fast approaching how important it is that you and your family stay hydrated.

On a side note, it is handy to have while you are on bed rest since it does not leak! Thank you Heartrate Monitors USA for carrying the Camelbak bottles. Until we meet again At the Fence, have a great day!

The Joy of Birding Book Review and Giveaway

Hey Neighbors!

It is simply gorgeous out today in Chicago. The bad news is that I can't enjoy it. As you may have noticed I did not post at all Saturday and now I am posting from bed. I pinched a nerve in my back and I am trying to stay off my feet. Not easy to do!

So while I am reclining in my bed I thought I would enjoy a book and do a post. The book is The Joy of Birding A Beginners Guide by Kate Rowinski. In some of my previous posts I included pictures of the birds that are showing up at our bird feeders. The whole family enjoys watching them, but my 14 year old daughter really loves birds. She has taken hundreds, literally hundreds of pictures of the birds in our yard. Good thing it is a digital camera. I would hate to be paying for developing all her pictures. Anyway, this is a great book for us as we start our birdwatching ventures.

The introduction asks if you are a birder or a bird-watcher. I would say I am a bird-watcher, but my daughter will most likely become a birder. She will continue to learn more about types of birds, why they are drawn to different areas of the country, sounds birds make, what they eat etc. It is books like this that will help her. This book covers subjects like that. There are beautiful color pictures throughout the entire book. We even recognized a few we have seen in our yard. The book takes the time to describe different nesting habits, molting and recognizing birds by their profile or different calls. I really found this most interesting.

There is a section on 25 backyard birds you should know. Here I have to confess I knew some, but not even close to all of them!

One of my favorite chapters was on Backyard Bird Feeding since we are working on having feeders out on a regular basis now. This section covers different types of feeders, what types of feed attracts certain birds, where to place the feeders and so much more. I am going to be using some of the information in here to discourage squirrels! The next chapter covers different recipes and blends.

The Joy of Birding includes a section on Your Backyard Sanctuary. I will be using some ideas from this section also. Things like having plants and bushes that provide shelter, nesting options, and water supply, all important for attracting birds.

And of course I have to mention sharing the birding experience with your children. Starting young and encouraging them to help in the care and feeding. Teaching them to listen to and identify the bird calls and songs. Below are some of the birds we have had visit this year.

I would definitely recommend this book to my neighbors who are interested in birds. The Joy of Birding retails for $14.95. You can purchase the book through the publisher, Skyhorse Publishing. What a great way to Get Out and Get Active with your family! Introduce them to birds.

3 At the Fence readers will win a copy of this book.

5 Unforgettable Summer Getaways for Children

Hey Neighbors, with summer vacation fast approaching here are 5 great getaways that children would enjoy. With 6 children we have many different interests in our family, so we have been able to experiment with different types of getaways.

One of our favorites would be the Grand Canyon. There are some nice hotels right outside the Grand Canyon, or you can travel about 1 hour away for lodging. We stayed an hour away. The Grand Canyon obviously is large enough that you can spend several days exploring. There are paths and viewing points all along the rim of the canyon. The views are tremendous. You can see so far away. The view seems never ending! There is also a variety of wildlife. There are some very friendly squirrels, we saw one snake and then the best was the Elk. They were all along the road. We were able to get some really nice pictures.

Another favorite was our trip to St Augustine FL. Here there is a State Campground right on the water. You do need to make your reservations in advance! We were able to walk the beach early in the morning and select shells and the occasional starfish. We even found a sharks tooth. One of the afternoon trips we made to the beach a small group of whales were passing by and another visitor allowed us to use their binoculars to watch when they surfaced. That was a memory! My older daughters enjoyed walking the old stone streets in town and visiting the little shops. We purchased some small trinkets, along with a dish set I found. There is a small (and I mean small) shop that bakes bread that you can purchase. We bought one loaf and ate it while walking through town, by the time we decided to buy another they had closed for the day. It was super!

My 17 year old son loves to visit the home of Sgt. York. It is in the mountains of Tennessee. Not only is the scenery goreous the history is interesting. Sgt. York grew up near Pall Mall Tennessee. He became a hero in World War I by leading an attack on a German machine gun nest taking 32 machine guns, killing 28 German Soldiers and capturing 132 more. My son had read several books about him, so he was really excited to get to visit his home. And we were able to meet one of his sons who works with the park system at his home. Talk about nice!

We were able to visit the Alamo recently which is a major site of American history. It was a little disconcerting to see the Fort in the middle of downtown with the tall buildings all around, but after you enter and are in the actual fort area it is extremely interesting. They have many displays for you to see, there is a short video about the Alamo and the people who were in the fort at the time. This is one the whole family enjoyed. Remember the Alamo!

Niagara Falls would also be one of my choices for children to see. We have managed to visit there several times now and you can never get over seeing the Falls. Just the beauty surrounding it and then the huge falls. You can see across to the Canadian side in good weather. We strolled along the side and watched the view. There is also a boat trip you can take. We have been unable to do this so far. Some of my family did take a trip up in the Hot Air Balloon you can take up over the Falls. They said the view was breath taking!

Thorlos Socks Review and Giveaway!

Hi Neighbors!

We are still in Chicago and having a great time! Yesterday we actually managed to visit some of the thrift stores in the area! I love thrift stores and yard sales! As a general rule though, I do not purchase used socks. Which brings me to the subject of my next Get Out Get Active post. I recently received some socks from Thorlos for review and I am excited about these socks. They are so comfortable. As you know I am walking a lot lately. So I was very interested in trying a pair of their Walking Socks (Unisex) White Mini Crew. I love the way they are designed. There is extra cushioning in the heel and ball of your foot areas in the sock. Extra cushioning for all the extra work you are putting on your foot. The exclusive Thor Lon construction is designed to wick moisture better. There is thin cushioning at the instep for lace pad protection and then Spandex in the arch for better fit. The specific socks I received are for use on the treadmill, local track or a stroll around the neighborhood.

Thorlos Walking Socks:

"Walking Thorlos are designed to help protect your feet from the damaging forces of impact, shear and blistering that are common to walking. In order to provide these “Quality of Walking Life” benefits, THOR•LO has spent 25 years in Research and Development learning about the “demands” that walking puts on your feet, and what specific sock design and construction is needed to protect the Walking Foot from those specific activity demands"

I also received a pair of Light Hiking Socks. They are a moderate cushion mini crew. Perfect for day hikes in moderate to hot climates with flat to varied terrain. To me these are the perfect socks to walk on nature trails at parks. We often go camping and these would be great when we take family hikes. These also are super soft! And an interesting fact on the back of the package states:"Always wear your Tholos when fitting footwear. An improper fit can reduce circulation (footwear too tight = feet too hot/cold)." Mine are a pretty pink. Love them!

Then I also received 2 pairs of the Experia Socks. One pair is medium and is a Royal Blue, while the second pair is a small Turquoise. My daughter who likes to jog has claimed both of them! Experia is anatomically engineered for aero-dynamic fit and protection without weight. This is powered by Thorlo pads. These socks are designed with high performance runners, cyclists, hikers, and fitness walkers in mind. Those who prefer a minimal amount of foot protection. These are NOT recommended for active people with any distracting foot issues or long time wearers of Thorlos thick or moderate cushioned products. My son will probably claim one of these from his sister as they like to jog together in the mornings. SO if you are a dedicated runner, cyclist or hiker you just might want to check out a pair of Experia ($13.99).

Thorlos actually has a special going right now, where if you purchase 3 pairs of socks you will receive a 4th pair free. Thorlos carries different socks for different sports and for different levels of activity. This is one of their great benefits. they have socks for walking, running, hiking, cycling, basketball, tennis, skiing, western and everyday comfort.

Here is just one of the interesting FAQs I found on the Thorlos website:

"Does Thorlos come in Natural Fibers like cotton or wool? Let's deal with one at time. Cotton is a great fiber for outer apparel. It is cool and breathable; and it feels good next to the skin. Unfortunately, in the closed environment of a shoe, it becomes the enemy of the foot. During activities both mild and vigorous, the foot perspires. Cotton is what is called a hydrophilic fiber - it attracts and absorbs moisture. As the cotton fiber gets wet, the fabric collapses and loses all of its protective capabilities. This of course can lead to blisters and other foot issues, and it's why you will NOT find cotton in Thorlos, except in the tops of a few of our styles (but never in the foot). We put it in the tops to help absorb perspiration that may run down the leg before it gets into the shoe or boot.

Wool is also a great fiber. It has excellent insulating capabilities, and it retains those capabilities when it gets wet. Unfortunately, wool is easily abraded - it is not particularly durable. Like cotton, it too tends to absorb water. It will dry fairly quickly when exposed to the air; but again, in the closed environment of a shoe, like cotton, wool tends to absorb water, the fabric collapses, and it loses its protective capabilities. Many of the Thorlos outdoor products have some wool content; but we blend wool with other high performance fibers that retain their protective resilience to provide insulating capabilities without sacrificing protection and durability."

Thorlos sent me 3 extra pairs of socks, that one winner will receive. Here is what the winner will receive:1 pair Thorlos Thick Cushion Hiking Sock Medium Khaki Crew (Women's) 1 pair Thorlos Thick Cushion Running Sock Medium WH/PLAT Mini Crew (Unisex) and 1 pair Thorlos Thick Cushion Tennis Sock Medium White Crew (Unisex)

Mandatory Entry: Visit the Thorlos website and then in a comment here tell me which of their socks most interest you. You do not have to be a blogger to enter, but you must leave a valid email where you can be reached should you win. This giveaway will end 6/2 at 11:59 pm CST. The winner will be chosen using random.org and will be notified by email. The winner will have 48 hours to respond. (USA Only)

I Want to Put Bunkbeds on My Enclosed Back Patio

Hi Neighbors!

I am seriously wanting to turn our enclosed back patio into a spare bedroom. Sort of a dream right now, but you never know. I personally think Bunk beds would work best. When we have company I would probably move my 2 boys out there so someone could have their room and bathroom. Anyway, I checked MoreBunkBeds.com, one of the Cymax Store, for a bunkbed clearance. While searching I found the Canwood Alpine II Twin over Full Bunk Bed in Espresso. I like the design of this one, along with the price! It would fit in well and has the wood drawers for under the bed. More storage!

I also considered the option of a futon bunk. Both of my boys are getting old enough that they just might prefer sharing the larger futon and allowing someone else to sleep on the top bunk. You just never know for sure with boys. One minute they love a bunk bed and the next they are outgrowing it. You know they stop liking sleeping on the top bunk. I like the Atlantic Furniture Columbia Twin Over Futon Bunk Bed in Caramel Latte. This is a nice option because they can use the futon during the day to sit on and read books or study even if we didn't have guests.

Last I checked on bunk beds with a trundle. I still can't decide for sure. I found the Lea Elite Classics Bunk Bed in Medium Brown Cherry. I really liked this one because of the dark wood and it looked masculine enough for boys. It is also available in twin over full or full over full. Then with the trundle bed available we would have plenty of room for guests. Possibly even the guests could have that room instead of moving the boys. Hmmm. This one is looking better and better.

What do my neighbors think? Which one do you like best? Right now this is just something I would like to do in the future. At this point the boys have to use sleeping bags when someone visits. I think I might have to do some more looking into this. Thanks for your thoughts!

See you next time At the Fence!

SimulTalk Headset Review and Giveaway

Hi Neighbors!

How are you doing today? I hope you are having as great a week as I am! We so enjoy visiting Chicago. Now, back to Get Out and Get Active! SimulTalk sent me the Dangle Sports Headset. Before I even tell you any more about this headset, I have to tell you I am sold on it! The Dangle Sports Headset is designed to keep the earbuds from being ripped from your ears. Has that ever happened to you? You are listening to music while exercising, or perhaps doing housework, and your wire catches on something and rips out of your ear. That is not fun, nor does it feel good. The Dangle headset is formed in a circle that you place around your neck and the earbuds are on each side for you to place in your ears. The wire hangs down the front to attach to your mp3 player, iPod, cell phone, laptop, etc. There is a retractable wire that connects between the headset and whatever device you are using. The headset is designed like a necklace with earbuds. It also has a mic and a shirt clip. The Dangle Headset comes with different size ear bud gels so you get the perfect fit. With the retractable wire you virtually have no excess wire dangling in your way. Put it on, adjust to your requirements and then take off. These are great for a walking program! I can listen to anything I have on my mp3 player.

This also works great with my computer. I can listen while doing work on my computer. I can also record with the mic. This is a seriously handy gadget! Right now you can purchase them on the SimulTalk website for $19.95, they are regularly $29.95. So if you are interested, make sure you order one soon! With my set I also received the Headset Splitter ($9.95), which allows two people to listen at once. Each piece on the Splitter has it's own volume control. What a great benefit! Have you ever tried to listen with a splitter and the other person needs it softer or louder than you? And the Laptop Adapter ($4.95) which allows you to connect to both the headphone and mic jack on your computer. Thus you can listen and record.

Above is the Laptop Adapter.

Above is the Splitter with the volume control.

Another quick little fact is, a test was run on the Dangle Headset and they found out that 99.1% of the radio frequencies emitted by a radio are not present at the ear buds. If you add their ferrite bead that is changed to 99.9% of the radiation.

I highly recommend the Dangle Sports Headset!

SimulTalk is offering 5 winners a Dangle Sports Headset! So hurry up and enter !

Weighted Walking Vest from Empower Fitness Review and Giveaway

Hi Neighbors!

Glad to see you out At the Fence today! We are visiting Chicago again and it is chilly, damp, and windy out. Empower Fitness sent me this great item to Get Out and Get Active. It is a Weighted Walking Vest. You can adjust the weight from 4-8 lbs. It is really quite comfortable to wear whether you are walking, jogging, or just working around the house. I am starting to walk and my 24 year old daughter walks every morning. She has also enjoyed using my new vest. To begin with, although not very important, I like the color! The weighted vest is not so large as to be an inconvenience. It was designed with simplicity. There is a built in weight of 4 lbs. and then there are an additional 4 lbs. that you can add as desired. There are pockets that velcro shut to hold the extra weights.

This is the back view. There is a reflective strip for safety purposes.

Here is the view from the front. There are 4 small reflective strips. The vest has a belt that clips in the front to hold the vest in place, although my daughter prefers not to use this and the vest still stays in place.

The weights (1 lb. each), can be placed in the pockets as needed. There are two in the center of the back, and one on each side in the front.

Just the added weight will help you to become more physically fit. The vest helps you to burn more calories in less time.

Are you thinking about starting an exercise program? Then one of these vests would be great for you. Put it on and start walking! Adjust the weight to suit your needs. Want a light day? Remove the weights. Want a little more of a workout, stick the extra weights in. The vest is designed to fit sizes 2-16, but I will tell you that I am larger than that and wear it with the belt unhooked. There is no exercise easier than walking. Pick a good time of day for you to start and stick with it. Have an mp3 player with some music, map out a route and then stick to it. I have heard it said, if you can continue something for 30 days it will become a habit. So don't give up! You can order the vest through the website for $39.99 plus tax and shipping. Or you could enter to try to win one.

Thinking of Re-doing Your Bedroom?

Hi Neighbors!

Great to see you out today! Have any of you been considering changing your bedroom around? I have, and I wanted to share with you a really great site I found! It is called Bedroomfurniturenmore.com a Cymax store. They carry so many different styles of modern bedroom furniture. You know how sometimes you just want a change? My husband used to know I was expecting when I decided to change the house around! He better keep his eye on me after browsing this site.

I could really enjoy shopping here! One of my favorite style of beds are the sleigh beds. I think that is the one I would choose if I had unlimited funds and the ability to choose whatever I wanted. There is just something about that design. My favorite on their site is the American Drew Cherry Grove Sleigh Bed in Antique Cherry. Love it! I much prefer dark wood over light. The 8 drawer Chest on Chest is gorgeous! The wood just shines.

With all the different types of beds available at Bedroomfurniturenmore.com you will have no problem finding a bedroom set to fit your needs. They carry everything from modern to old fashioned, adult to children's, oak to pine or even metal if that is what you prefer. I think my 10 year old daughter would want the Little Miss Liberty Windsor Round Metal Canopy Bed. Talk about a princess bed!

Another great benefit is they carry bedding too! Obviously my daughter would want the bedding that goes with the bed above. I don't think you could find anything that would look better! I personally like the Southern Textiles Legacy Elite 11 Piece Bedding Set.

What do you think neighbors? Would this go well with the Sleigh Bed pictured above? I wouldn't want the room too dark looking and I think this would be perfect to lighten it up. Take a minute to leave a comment and give me your opinion, or perhaps mention one of the bedroom sets you like best.

In closing I just have to share one more item they have that I really would love to have, but not for the bedroom. This would be in the family room. The Kush Furniture Big Sur Blanket Chest in Pine Finish. This chest has character, and what a great addition it would make to store games or toys in!

Thanks again neighbors for stopping by! I look forward to your next visit At the Fence.

Newman's Own Organics Dog Treats Review and Giveaway!

Hi Neighbors,

I couldn't just cover the people food! Newman's Own Organics also has dog treats, which Roxie and Shadow were able to try! Now, I have to admit, I am not as particular about our dogs having healthy organic food, but I was extremely happy to try Newman's Own Organics Dog Treats. Remember that when you Get Out and Get Active that your dog should too! What a great snack to take with you (for your dog!) when you take your dog on a walk, or for training, or just plain old fun outside!

Roxie and Shadow both enjoyed the Newman's Own Organics Dog Treats. They were able to try several different flavors. They both enjoyed all the meat flavored, but I think, my opinion only, that they enjoyed the Peanut Butter most! They are presently working on the Beef and Barley.

Newman's Own Organics Dog Treats are made with organic barley, no wheat, no corn. They are USDA Organic. How do you know that these are at least 95% organic? The USDA\'s National Organic Program (NOP) provides very specific labeling and manufacturing requirements to assure you that the product is indeed 95% organic.

I like them also because they are easy to break into smaller pieces. Roxie can eventually chew anything up, but Shadow (the larger dog, ok la
rger than Roxie) prefers small treats.
Roxie and Shadow give Newman's Own Organics a Paws Up!

One reader (reader's dog) will get to try Newman's Own Organics Dog Treats.

See you soon At the Fence!
